Set design

Training offered in the Winter session from January 9 to March 15, 2024

The set technician works under the supervision of the set designer or, if applicable, the chief set designer, and mainly performs tasks related to the handling, installation, and removal of set elements.

Course plan

  • General presentation of the art department
  • Detailed presentation of the props department: local and foreign shootings
  • Roles and tasks of different professions in the art department: On-set prop master, off-set prop master, set designer, on-set decorator, and set technicians.
  • Other jobs in the department/assistants (sculpture/molding, painters, carpenters, special effects, landscapes, etc.)
  • Management of a budget and an expense account
  • Props: assessment of quantities required for shooting.
  • Continuity: importance of matching props and set (photo capture/sorting by scenes/PDF expert)
  • Rights and sponsorships (overview)
  • Advertising: specific features for props and set technicians/ tips and tricks for “beauty shots”
  • Working in any season (technician’s clothing)
  • Practical tips of the prop master profession and others
  • Managing the “wrap”, returns, sales, and ecological disposal
  • Safe use of aerial work platforms
  • Safe use of forklift

Mandatory basic general course

Here is the content of the mandatory basic general course for all training:

  • “Masterclass” type conference for everyone
  • History of Quebec cinema
  • First aid course
  • Teamwork / Interaction with other departments / Hierarchy
  • Understanding of hazardous products (WHMIS)
  • Occupational health and safety. Ergonomics advice/Thermal control (cold and hot). Fire zone (fires, propane, gas). Fire line-corridor
  • Criminal and penal responsibilities
  • New sanitary measures (COVID).
  • Physical and psychological harassment
  • Law on driving heavy vehicles (law 430)
  • Stowing (general), SAAQ road code.
  • Transportation Policies-Drugs, Alcohol, tickets, fines. ATV-Golf cart
  • Awareness of residents and the unpredictables of locations-Impact on shooting locations-living environment
  • Understanding of direction and production documents
  • Understand the chain of all departments associated with a production
  • Application of green sets
  • Equipment responsibilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the AQTIS-514-IATSE union agreement
  • Introduction to associative life – AQTIS 514 IATSE
  • What is a producer? Role in production and interaction with the technical team
